Service Learning

Young people play a crucial role as changemakers in shaping society and our collective future. At University Cooperative School, children (and families!) can be changemakers! Our students are encouraged to get involved and find creative solutions to tackle complex problems, enhance people’s lives, and positively impact their community.

Our service learning projects empower students to create positive changes, big and small, in a way that is accessible and developmentally aligned for their age.

Some examples of service learning activities include:

  • Partnering with local charities to provide food, clothes, and other necessities to community members in need. Some organizations we have partnered with include University District Food Bank, Youthcare, Seattle Community Fridge, Refugees NW, Mary’s Place, and more.

  • Research projects with service learning components: Students choose a social, economic, or environmental cause that is personally meaningful to them. They research the cause, find ways to make positive changes, and educate their classmates about their topic. Our changemakers have come up with many creative ideas to make an impact, from organizing beach cleanup days to writing letters to government representatives to hosting sidewalk art sales to raise funds for causes that are important to them!
