Physical Education

University Cooperative School’s physical education program helps students develop physical and social skills, and a lifelong love for healthy physical activity. The program’s four essential components are reinforced through play and practice:

  • Sportsmanship – Each student learns positive social behavior through movement and interaction with others.

  • Physical fitness – Students learn to develop and maintain the best possible level of performance, understanding, and appreciation for physical fitness.

  • Skill acquisition – Each student learns specific skills, such as throwing, catching, striking, and kicking.

  • Self-image – Students develop a positive self-image that includes awareness and understanding of one’s body, the use of the body as a means of expression, and the body as an instrument for self-realization.

Pre-K through Second Grade PE

Our Lower Elementary students explore basic movement skills through fun and engaging activities. Time spent in PE, Capoeira class, movement breaks in the gym, classroom activities, outdoor education, an hour-long recess, and dance class all provide opportunities for gross motor development. Emphasis is placed on cooperative play, time outdoors, following directions, and enjoying physical activity.

Third through Fifth Grade PE

Upper Elementary students engage in various activities promoting cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. In addition to PE time in our gym, they participate in Dance/Drama, Capoeira, Biking, and Skiing/Snowboarding programs. During gym, third through fifth graders explore a variety of sports, learning the rules and strategies of each game.

Ultimate Frisbee Team

Third through fifth grade students have the option to join University Cooperative School’s Ultimate Team! All students are invited to join a practice season in the fall and/or join our team in the spring when they compete with fellow elementary school teams.
